You might have noticed that I’ve posted an inordinate number of pocket watches today. This is because when I’m obsessed with a thing and bored at work it becomes very easy to share my obsession with others. (Plus tumblr is excellent for archiving photos when I’m away from my home files.)
Right now I have an eye on pocket watches and interesting gear work while I get into the headspace of one of my characters. (You’re all going to be afraid if I do a similar exercise for Jacob; he’s all body parts, people.) So far I think it’s working, in no small part to finding joyofprecision which is a tumblr dedicated to watch repair and renovation. I think I might love that site, you guys. ♥

Not too long ago, I discovered that a friend of mine had this nice little 15 jewel Illinois pocket watch. It had apparently been passed down to him, but he had never seen it running. At a cursory glance it appeared to have a broken mainspring (or a mainspring that had slipped off the winding…
